When your pet gets within a yard of the device, it will activate, and when it crosses the area that's protected, a warning sound is emitted, followed by a short burst of compressed air. Once your pet has started to associate the noise with the burst of air, you can switch the Mini-Scarecrow to 'sound only' option. Eventually, your pet won't even go near the protected area. The air sprayer has 3 positions and the motion sensor has 5 positions that can be adjusted for the most effective use.
