Groundhog Resistant Plants To Grow

Groundhogs are one of the most destructive critters on gardeners 'hit list.' And, they are tricky to keep out of gardens. While there are Olympic groundhogs that climb, the main concern for gardeners is burrowing since they create tunnel systems to reach crops and to stay out of sight from predators. There are many plants that can be grown throughout the spring to help reduce the number of groundhogs on sight. 

Groundhog resistant plants:

  • Chives
  • Fennel
  • Garlic
  • Lavender
  • Coneflower
  • Snapdragon
  • Peony
  • Baby's Breath
  • Hay-scented fern

These plants can be grown around a metal rodent fence as a secondary layer and are used to rid rabbits, bunnies and even deer. For growers using deer fencing, it's recommended to trench the fence into the ground at least 6 inches to block groundhog tunneling.
