It's World Wildlife Conservation Day!

Posted by Jennifer Smith on 4th Dec 2018

December 4, 2018 marks World Wildlife Conservation Day; and the decline of over all wildlife is unreal. Let's take a look at the deer population for an example.

The total U.S.deer population in 2014 was about 32.2 million; 28.6 million whitetails and 3.6 million mule deer, blacktails, and other. That's down from 33.5 million in 2013; 29.9 million white tails and 3.6 million mule deer, blacktails, and other.

Here are some numbers according from Earth Day:

  • The number of animals living on the land has fallen by 40% since 1970.
  • Marine animal populations have also fallen by 40% overall.
  • Overall, 40 percent of the world’s 11,000 bird species are in decline.
  • Animal populations in freshwater ecosystems have plummeted by 75% since 1970.
  • Insect populations have declined by between 60 and 75% in some places of the world.
  • About a quarter of the world’s coral reefs have already been damaged beyond repair, and 75 percent of the world’s coral reefs are at risk from local and global stresses.
  • It is estimated that humans have modified >50% of Earth’s land surface, which has affected many ecosystems as well as the range in which specific species of wildlife used to exist.

There are many reasons for the decline of animals including climate change; habitat loss; and hunting.

Deerbusters encourages conservation managers and animal lovers alike to get involved this Wildlife Conservation Day by helping to improve habits and protect wild animals.
