Who First Spread Lyme Disease?

Posted by Jennifer Smith on 15th Mar 2018

It's easy enough for us to point the finger at the white-tailed deer; but history shows that deer herds are not responsible for the spread of ticks and Lyme Disease.

The white-footed mouse carries the Lyme Disease bacterium; and it is suggested that the mice spread this popular vector disease from ticks over to birds. Birds, being migratory animals, dispersed ticks throughout the United States, passing them over to deer.

Today, there are over 400,000 white-tailed deer roaming throughout the United States and over 300,000 cases of Lyme Disease in humans each year.

Although we should blame rodents for tick diseases, we blame deer. Instead of blaming the wild animals, let's do something about it.

What do we do for tick prevention?

  1. Install deer fencing to rid deer from yards;
  2. Install rodent fencing to rid small critters;
  3. Apply tick sprays to grassy areas;
  4. Apply ticks sprays on ourselves when hiking/camping
