Why Grow Hemp?

Posted by Jennifer Smith on

With the legalization of cannabis across the country, more growers are learning how to grow cannabis and are taking advantage of the cash crop.

What is the difference between marijuana and hemp? Both come from the cannabis plant; however, hemp contains less than .3% of THC. This means that the hemp flower will not give users psychedelic effects.

While marijuana is recognized more for medicinal and recreational purposes, hemp is a versatile crop used in several industries including: rope, textiles, clothing, shoes, food, paper, bioplastics, insulation, and biofuel. It is also used in the health industry because hemp seeds are rich in healthy fats. They are also a great protein source and contain high amounts of Vitamin E, iron and zinc among others. Hemp fibers are 10 times stronger than cotton and are even replacing natural resources.

Hemp is considered to be the strongest natural fiber in the world; and is a high-yield crop. One acre of hemp produces twice as much oil as one acre of peanuts, and nearly four times as much fiber pulp (for paper) as an acre of trees.

Hemp can grow nearly anywhere in the world, in many types of soil — even in short growing seasons or in dry regions — and helps purify soil as well as kill some types of weeds.

Recommended product for hemp growers: Trellis netting for vertical support of hemp plants.
