It's National Pollinator Month!

Posted by Jennifer Smith on

Over 1/3 of the world's crops require bee pollination; and without their help, we wouldn't be able to enjoy many of our favorite fruits and vegetables. June is the time of year to learn the buzz about bees including why bees matter and what we can do to protect bees and pollinating flowers from the threat of deer damage.

Bees are just one of many beneficial insects that help to pollinate flowers and crops for our consumption. Others include hummingbirds, bats and butterflies. Honey bees alone help to produce  nearly $20 billion to the value of U.S. crop production' and as such, are very important for our economic growth.

Now that we know how important they are, we may stop swatting them away and spraying them with water hoses in the summertime. We may care for them more and grow pollinating plants for their consumption (and ours). And, we may protect our bees and plants from deer damage with deer fencing and other effective deer management strategies. If gardeners do not protect pollinating plants from wildlife browsing, then bees suffer (and so do we).

June is National Pollinator Month. Let's do our part to spread the word about bee pollination and the impact bees have in our lives.

There are many perennial flowers and shrubs that can grow to help [...]

Why We Need To Save the Bees

Stop swatting away bees! While they may freak us out when they are buzzing around our ears, they are known as beneficial insects for a reason.
