Celebrating 4th of July With Pets

Posted by Jennifer Smith on

America's birthday is just around the corner; and as such, homeowners are planning holiday parties. While planning has been centered around people, we want to take some time to discuss what to do with pets during 4th of July festivities.

Pets can be scared of the loud banging noises of fireworks and the extensive guest list. New faces, sights and sounds can make dogs extremely hyper or timid. During Independence Day celebrations, pet owners can use a few different techniques as distractions:

  • Play with dogs; so, they ignore what is going on around them.
  • Play soft music, such as Jazz to calm their nerves. Jazz music is soothing and will relax dogs from the loud flares in the sky.
  • Pet dogs - this also calms them down.
  • Leave dogs inside away from the booms and bangs; or outside in the fenced-in backyard, if attendees are inside partying the night away.

Pay attention to the signs of a scared dog and make sure your furry friend is safe this July 4th.

Here are the signs of a scared pooch:

  • Flattened ears
  • Lip licking
  • tail tucked between legs
  • Avoiding eye contact
  • Over-excessive scratching
