Happy Cat Month

Spread Cat Happiness This September

Cats make wonderful pets: they are independent, playful animals that do not demand constant attention from pet owners. They are ideal for busy individuals that may do quite a bit of wandering or traveling and get along with other pets, including dogs. It's no wonder why pet owners think cats make the purrfect pet!

This September, CATalyst Council celebrates Happy Cat Month, an event that serves to educate and inform cat owners in regards to what they can do to ensure their pet is happy. (CATalyst Council)

While cats are independent in nature, a cat owner will have to do more than just set out cat food and a fresh litter box. Cats require the same love and attention as dogs; and they wouldn't mind having a playmate. They require exercise; proper dental care and entertainment. They love car rides; and enjoy spending time outside. (Click here to see cat fencing.)

Have you considered cat adoption? Here's why you should:

Cat homelessness has grown in recent years; and there are over 1 million cats brought into animal shelters each year with another 860,000 cats euthanized because of lack of adoption. When cats enter into shelters, they are often malnourished, defensive and un-trusting toward humans. They may have been born as feral cats; or they have been abandoned by previous owners. Regardless, most of these cats have never had adequate veterinary care.

Over 87 percent of homeless cats have not been spayed or neutered. While we love seeing kittens, homeless kitties is not how we envisioned seeing them. Cat enthusiasts interested in helping homeless cats should consider starting a TNR Program for feral cats. Not only will starting a Feral Cat Program get cats off the streets for some time, but the program provides cat vet care to reduce the homeless cat population.

If starting a TNR Program isn't really your thing, consider adopting a cat from an animal shelter near you, or volunteering at a local cat rescue to make a cat's day.
