February Plants To Grow

Posted by Jennifer Smith on

Why wait until spring to begin a fruit and vegetable garden? There are plenty of plants to grow in February that can be enjoyed later in spring and summer. Here is a list of plants to grow in February:

Vegetables: In some climates, it is appropriate to begin growing tomatoes. However, in most of the country, this action will have to wait. Until then, grow celery, Brussel sprouts, eggplant, broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce.

Fruits: Start planting berries and melons in February to enjoy in just a few months. This includes: Strawberries, cantaloupe and watermelon - favorite summer treats!

Herbs: February is a great time to plant sweet herbs such as basil, garlic, chives and parsley. These herbs are not only good to have on-hand to jazz up recipes, but they are considered to be deer-resistant plants. Having these herbs around an organic garden is an easy way to keep deer at bay from growing sites.

Winter gardening tip: With spring around the corner, mid-winter is a good time to begin planting in home gardens and to start thinking about deer management strategies such as deer fence installation
