It's National Pollinator Week!

Posted by Jennifer Smith on

National Pollinator Week was created by The Pollinator Partnership in 2007 to raise awareness about the important role of bees and other pollinators in the agriculture industry.

Did you know that pollinators are responsible for helping produce over one-third of the world's produce? Without them feeding on nectar from flowers, fruits and veggies, we wouldn't have much foods to enjoy.

Bees are just one of many pollinating insects. There are also hummingbirds, bats, and butterflies to name a few more. When they don't eat, we don't eat; which is why this Pollinator Week (June 17-23, 2019) Deerbusters encourages gardeners to get outside and grow pollinating flowers.(Growers may need to fence out deer.)

There are many types of pollinating flowers that can grow in the spring and summer months including:

  • Lavender
  • Dahlia
  • Cosmos
  • Verbena
  • Marigolds
  • Oregano/Marjoram

Not only are these plants available for pollination, but they are also useful for keeping deer out of gardens, as they are deer resistant!

Pollinator-friendly plants are fun to grow year-round and create a rainbow in the garden. Bee populations are declining; so, do your part to save the bees today!
