"Watch Out For Wildlife" Week Begins

Posted by Jennifer Smith on

California's Department of Fish and Wildlife are asking residents to watch out for wildlife on the roadways this week. The hope is that there will be less accidents if drivers reduce speed and will save animals from being hit on the road.

California Highway Patrols says that in 2017, 12 people died and 383 were injured in more than 2,000 crashes involving wildlife on California roads. (Action News Now)

Cal Trans is hoping to reduce traffic accidents by installing fencing for wildlife protection.

Watch Out For Wildlife Week is running now as deer and elk migration time begins.

Roadway officials are asking drivers to not swerve away from animals which will cause additional accidents and even fatalities. Instead, slow down and brace for impact.

Other tips for road safety include:

  • Be alert near rivers and streams
  • One deer may mean more are near
  • Look for movement, such as reflective eyes at night
