Don't Step On A Bee Day

Posted by Jennifer Smith on

On July 10th, we take time to spread the word about the importance of bees and why we need to save the bees. Fruit and vegetable growers know how important bee pollination is for bountiful crops; but perhaps our blog readers aren't aware.

Think twice the next time you swat away a bee or or step on a bee. Here's why.

Over 1/3 of the world's crops require at least some pollination from beneficial insects including honey bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. While some fruits, such as pears or bananas, will grow, they will not fully develop without the help of bee pollination. Since bees require the pollen and nectar of certain plants for survival, we, as growers, must do our part to protect bees from humans and wild predators. When deer eat pollinating flowers, bees suffer. When bears go after honey hives, bees suffer. When bees suffer, our crops suffer; and therefore, we suffer.

So, how do we reduce the decline of bee colonies? By protecting them with deer fencing. Most wild animals will not bother bees; but they want the plants and honey that comes with them.

This #DontStepOnaBee Day, spread the word about the buzz about bees; and do your part to help bee farm thrive.
